Maybe it’s related to the fact that, thus far in 2011, according to Wikipedia, there have been: over 1700 tornados in the US alone and worldwide tornados have been exceptionally destructive and deadly, a major Tsunami, a sea of wildfires, 3 nuclear accidents, mega flooding, 3 major blizzards, birds falling out of the sky, thousands of dead fish washing ashore all over the world, on-going wars, drought, famine, worldwide financial fiasco, high unemployment, and a growing population that is aging, while seeing resources for Medicare and retirement decline. These are just a few of the stressors that are part of our life. Despite having eliminated Bin Laden, we’re not feeling all entirely safe.
While both the Hopis and Mayans predicted an approaching end of a World Age, (supposedly in 2012.) That could very well mean transitioning from one World Age to another, rather than a complete end of the World, as we know it. We can see that in our present World, as it has become flattened through the use of technology, there is a major shift in the way the World is functioning. We are already transitioning. The challenge is how we chose to enter the future ahead; we can either move forward with fear and resistance, or with acceptance. Our choice will determine whether the transition will happen (to us) with momentous changes, or with gradual peace and tranquility. We have to keep in mind what was forecasted was new beginnings, not the end of the world.
Many people get caught up in the fear prophecy, and they don’t have a clue as to how to channel this really crazy energy. There are apocalyptic expectations of catastrophic events, prompted by the media. Many of the recent environmental and weather disasters contribute to the feelings of impending doom. People feel that much of what is going on is beyond our control. People can feel crazy all kinds of ways: anxious, hyper, angry, depressed, lethargic, out of control, helpless, physically sick, or through an increase in domestic violence, and fatal accidents. Crazy stuff like that.
In my office, I hear mothers who are deeply concerned for their small children having stress reactions in school and coming home in terror from stories of A Foreboding 2012. Why are we filling each other’s heads with dreaded end of the world stories? We could be learning and teaching about how to calm our inner world, and build resilience and clarity in order to cope with actual or potential adversity.
I’m reminded of my grade school days when Dad wanted to build a bomb shelter in the basement. At school we’d prepare for the atomic bomb by putting our heads under our desks. That was a silly idea that definitely planted seeds of fear that could germinate into the collective unconscious. All the natural anomalies these days, that are occurring more frequently, can undermine an innate sense of wellbeing and safety. Couple that with the doomsday media, and it’s a recipe for panic.
You are always at the end of the world as you know it – that is why you need to know who you are, what you value, and how you want to be in the world. If you’re not happy with yourself right now … it’s time to reinvent. Because when you become lost in chaos, feel powerless, vulnerable, and not in control, you forget who you are. There is a feeling of NO self-esteem, a time of self-doubt, insecurity, feeling weak and vulnerable. You engage in self-talk of: “I’m getting old,” “my body’s falling apart,” “I will never be successful or happy,” “I don’t matter.” Become obsessed with toxic negative thoughts. View days as unstable, unpredictable, and destructive and approach life with fear. All that negative energy makes you more predisposed to chronic illness and depression.
If you really buy into the fact that you are marching toward the “Dreaded 2012,” you are missing the opportunity to create new beginnings and positively effect any transitions with Grace. We have to get this in perspective. Keep in mind that all this 2012 hype is on even a smaller scale than the huge build up of Y2K, which turned out to be a Total Non-Event. Earth events have been happening from the beginning of time. The Earth is a living thing and always changing as we all are.
You can not know where all the instability of nature, government, war, human abuse, natural and man made disasters is going to lead. However, you can take responsibility right now for how you manage your own energy.
What do you want to contribute to the world? Start inside yourself. Get a grip.
Find a calm, quieter, kind place. Live there.
Most importantly we all need to convey hope and optimism to our children. Teach them to be proactive and creative in taking responsibility for whom they are, and how they can contribute to the world.
Not long ago, people lived in communities, towns, villages, and tribes. They knew and helped each other, were intergenerational, and functioned as “one family.” There was a feeling of connectedness and being part of something bigger. Feeling safe. Not being isolated because of technology, or some overwhelming, paralyzing effects of fear and lack of trust. Today there is a movement to help adult children or aging parents, and sharing one home, embracing the opportunity to be “one family” and support and care for one another, as we would want to be cared for. We are doing this more all over the world. We are all one family.
We don’t need to feel crazy. We can feel inspired, loving, and a part of something.
It’s time to get our SELF OFF OUR OWN HANDS and make a difference in the world. Then we will receive the lessons of who we are, even in adversity.
“You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop and look fear in the face.”
~Eleanor Roosevelt
